On October 21, 2020, in a regular meeting of the Wenham Water Commission, after careful consideration, the Commission voted unanimously to increase the base rate from $32.50 to $45.00 per quarter. In addition to the base rate, they also increased the tier 1 rate from $2.40 per 1,000 gallons to $3.90 per 1,000 gallons per quarter. This rate increase will take effect on January 1, 2021 will be reflected in the billing cycle beginning in February 2021.
This is the first rate increase implemented by the Water Commission since 2008. It is necessary: to continue sound fiscal and operational management of the water distribution system, maintain sufficient reserve funds, and meet a new requirement to contribute the Water Department’s share of Town operating expenses. Wenham is committed to providing the best water quality available at one of the lowest water rates in the region.
As your water provider, our goal is to make sure there is an adequate supply of safe water to meet day-to-day needs, a sufficient supply in the event of a fire or other catastrophic event, and to foster and encourage water conservation. Our job is to ensure that your water keeps flowing not only today, but well into the future. It is all part of our commitment to serve you and everyone in our community. The structure of these rates was established considering the water use patterns of the residents and how best to maintain the system and continue to encourage water conservation.
